Bean of the Month

Edamame beans are whole, immature soybeans, sometimes referred to as vegetable-type soybeans. Although the pod itself is not edible, it adds flavor, making edamame in the pod an ideal snack. Soybeans were first cultivated in China some 7000 years ago, and began to be harvested by farmers in the United States in 1855.Soybeans are a whole protein source; a cup (155 grams) of cooked edamame provides around 18.5 grams of protein and is rich in healthy fiber, antioxidants and vitamin K.

Harvest of the Month

Golden Nugget Tangerine

The Gold Nugget tangerine was developed at the University of California, Riverside in the 1950s, but was not released until 1975 when a disease-resistant budwood had been established. Today, California accounts for more than 90% of tangerine production in the US. The Gold Nugget is a mandarin hybrid, a cross between two varieties, the wilking and kincy mandarins. Gold Nugget tangerines are high in vitamin C, folate, and dietary fiber. They also contain vitamin A, calcium, potassium, and antioxidants.
